The world of custom design has changed dramatically in the last five years, and the days of creating a custom piece of jewelry from a sales associate's counter sketch -- and the miscommunications that went with it -- are long gone.
The new technology allows for better communication within the design process. Here's how it works using a ring as an example:

Step 1 Using pictures and discussions with you, the client, the designer creates a CAD model of the new ring using specialized computer software. This model is then rendered to look like a photograph of the finished ring.

Step 2 On your approval of the design, the model is readied for printing on a rapid protoyping machine which prints out a high-definition wax of the life-sized ring.

Step 3 The wax model is cast in the metal of your choice using a lost wax casting process.

Step 4 The casting is set with gemstones and expertly finished
